Music Festival Packing List: Coachella and Beyond

·5 min read·Guides

Whether you're heading to Coachella, Bonnaroo, or a weekend festival closer to home, the packing logic is the same: you're outside for 10 or more hours a day, the temperature swings wildly, and whatever you bring, you're carrying it yourself. Getting this music festival packing list right is one of the most important decisions you'll make before the weekend.

Footwear Comes First

Coachella averages 8 to 10 miles of walking per day. Most major festivals are similar. Comfortable, broken-in shoes are non-negotiable.

For outdoor festivals in warm, dusty settings, closed-toe shoes or sneakers protect against uneven terrain and crowds. Bring flip flops for the campsite or hotel, but don't plan your whole day around them.

Dress for the Temperature Swing

Daytime temperatures at desert festivals like Coachella can hit the high 80s or 90s°F. Nights drop fast, sometimes by 30 to 40 degrees. That swing catches first-timers off guard every year.

Pack a lightweight layer for the evening: a denim jacket, a hoodie, or something you can tie around your waist or stuff in a small bag. During the day, stick to breathable clothing and sun protection.

Never forget the essentials

Your Festival Day Bag Checklist

Bring a small backpack or fanny pack, not your travel bag. You'll carry it all day. Check the festival's bag policy before you pack — most have size limits. Key things to keep inside:

  • High-fidelity earplugs, not foam ones. The foam kind muffle everything. Brands like Loop, Eargasm, or Flare reduce volume evenly so the music still sounds like music and you can still have a conversation. Your ears need this at a festival even if you don't feel like they do in the moment.
  • Sunscreen. Reapply throughout the day. Spray format works best without stopping.
  • Sunglasses and a hat. Direct desert sun at Coachella is relentless from late morning through mid-afternoon.
  • Portable charger. Your phone won't last a full festival day, especially with maps, photos, and mobile payments.
  • Cash and ID. Some vendors don't take cards, and you don't want to find that out when you're hungry.
  • A printed copy of the day's lineup. WiFi gets overwhelmed at festivals. If your phone dies or the signal drops right before your headliner goes on, paper saves you.
  • A bandana or neck gaiter. Useful for dust, cold evenings, and sun protection in one item.

What to Leave Behind

Leave the laptop at home. Skip expensive jewelry. Leave the DSLR unless photography is genuinely the reason you're going. Bulky bags mean longer security lines, tired shoulders, and more to worry about keeping safe.

Most festivals have bag size restrictions — check them before you pack.

Hydration

At outdoor festivals in warm climates, dehydration happens faster than you realize. Some venues allow empty water bottles to fill at refill stations. Check the festival's policy and bring one if allowed. Even if you can't, prioritize buying water throughout the day over any other spending.

Packing for a Multi-Day Festival

A few things that most people underestimate for Bonnaroo, Coachella weekend two, or any multi-day event:

  • Merino wool socks. They don't smell after multiple days of wear. It's one of those things that sounds like a gimmick until you're on day three of a festival and everyone around you is suffering except you.
  • Baby wipes. Essential for multi-day events without easy shower access. Most festivalgoers say these were their best decision.
  • Dry shampoo. Two days without a shower doesn't have to look like it.
  • A small portable speaker for the campsite or hotel room. The music stops in the venue after the last set. It doesn't have to stop for you.

Pack light and plan to re-wear things. Three to four outfits for a three-day festival is enough.
