Summer Travel Packing List: What to Bring This Season
Summer is the most traveled time of year, which means the most overpacked bags, the most forgotten essentials, and the most expensive last-minute purchases at the airport. A good summer travel packing list isn't just about what to bring — it's about getting the system right so every trip this season runs smoothly.

Get the Bag Size Right First
Every other packing decision flows from this one. The right rule of thumb:
- One week or under: a carry-on and a personal item. No exceptions. You don't need more space.
- Two weeks or longer: a medium checked bag. Not a large one. Large checked bags encourage overpacking and become a burden at every stop.
If you're connecting through multiple cities or doing a lot of ground transport, carry-on only is almost always the right call regardless of trip length. You move faster, nothing gets lost, and you can take any flight.
Packing Cubes Change Everything
If you haven't used compression packing cubes, summer is the time to start. A set of three or four cubes with compression zips can fit a week's worth of clothes into a carry-on that still leaves room for everything else. They also keep your bag organized so you're not repacking it every time you reach for something.
The compression matters more than the brand. Any set with a second zipper that compresses the cube down is the one to get.
Sun Protection: What to Buy Before You Go
Buying sunscreen at the destination is almost always more expensive. If you're traveling to Hawaii, Palau, or anywhere with reef protection laws, you legally need reef-safe sunscreen (no oxybenzone or octinoxate). Check before you travel — the fines are real.
For any sun-heavy trip:
- A spray sunscreen for reapplication without stopping
- A lotion SPF 50+ for initial coverage on exposed skin
- Lip balm with SPF, which most people forget until their lips are burned
The Packable Rain Jacket
Summer storms happen everywhere. A lightweight packable rain jacket stuffs into its own pocket and takes up almost no space in your bag. It's the kind of item you'll leave out of your bag once, get caught in a downpour, and never leave out again.

If You're Traveling Internationally
Two things to sort out before you reach the airport:
A universal travel adapter. Not all adapters work in all countries. Get a universal one that covers Europe, the UK, Australia, and Asia — it covers almost every destination and you only need to buy it once.
A portable power bank with USB-C. A 20,000mAh bank charges a phone four or five times. Enough for a full travel day and a day at the destination before you need to recharge it. USB-C charges faster and works with most modern devices.
For tropical destinations, add insect repellent with at least 20% DEET to your list. Mosquitoes in Southeast Asia, Central America, and parts of the Caribbean carry real risks. Hotel gift shops stock this but at significant markup.
Toiletries: The Carry-On Rule
If you're flying carry-on only, the 3-1-1 rule applies: liquids in containers of 3.4oz or less, all in a single quart-size bag. Get a set of TSA-approved leak-proof bottles and fill them at home. Solid versions of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash eliminate the liquid limit entirely and last longer than travel bottles.
